Quarantine Procedures

Mendham Township School District – Quarantine Information

August/September 2021

Due to Close Contact or Positive Test Results:

Quarantine if you have been in close contact (within 6 feet of someone for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period) with someone who has COVID-19, unless you have been fully vaccinated. People who are fully vaccinated do NOT need to quarantine after contact with someone who had COVID-19 unless they have symptoms. However, fully vaccinated people should get tested 3-5 days after their exposure, even if they don’t have symptoms until their test result is negative.

The NJDOH makes the final decisions about how long quarantine should last, based on local conditions and needs. We will follow the recommendations of our local public health department and the NJDOH.

The MTSD mandates the following quarantine periods:

For Positive Cases

  • After day 14 without testing
  • After day 10 after receiving a negative test result (test must occur on day 7 or later)

For Close Contacts

  • After day 10 without testing
  • After day 7 after receiving a negative test result (test must occur on day 5 or later)

Due to Elective Travel out of the Immediate Area/Region

The CDC, however, has recommendations for both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers. Travelers leaving New Jersey should check with the travel destination and transportation carrier (i.e., airline, cruise ship, etc.) to see if there are additional health and safety protocols or requirements, such as proof of a negative COVID-19 test within days of departure. Currently, the CDC recommends delaying travel until you are fully vaccinated.

Domestic Travel

At this time, there are no quarantine requirements for domestic travel.  For more information, refer to the CDC's guidance for domestic travel.

International Travel

The CDC requires all air passengers arriving in the United States from a foreign country to get tested for COVID-19 no more than 3 days before their flight departs and to present the negative result or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 to the airline before boarding the flight.

In addition, with specific exceptions, foreign nationals who have been in any of the following countries during the past 14 days may NOT enter the United States: India, China, Iran, countries in the European Schengen Area (see below), United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Brazil, and South Africa. For more details and a full list of exceptions, refer to the CDC's update on travelers prohibited from entry.

With specific exceptions, several Presidential proclamations suspend and limit entry into the United States, as immigrants or nonimmigrants, of noncitizens who were physically present within the following countries during the 14-day period preceding their entry or attempted entry into the United States.

The Mendham Township School District requires a negative test upon return, 3-5 days after travel prior to returning to in-person schooling FOR UNVACCINATED PERSONS.  Upon receipt of a negative test result, the UNVACCINATED student will be permitted to attend. VACCINATED students/staff are not subject to quarantine. There is no virtual option for students quarantining due to travel.
